Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters for Nuclear Science and Security

Abstract:

Many nuclear science applications could benefit from high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy achievable with metallic magnetic calorimeters (MMCs). This talk will discuss a few prominent applications of these devices, how they work, and work being done at LLNL to develop these devices. The two applications that will be discussed are the proposed use of these devices for nuclear safeguards purposes and the direct measurement of the neutrino mass by measuring the beta decay endpoint energy.
