Abstract:

China is the second largest energy consumer and largest coal consumer in the world. The heavy reliance on coal, and the dramatic increase in energy consumption growth since 2001 brought China to the top rank of CO2 emitters in 2007, surpassing the US. This talk will examine China's energy structure, the basic drivers of growth, options to move away from coal, and the consequences of China's alternative fuels program. It will focus on the energy crisis that has developed since 2001 and the government's response, and prospects for success.
