Monitoring Nuclear Reactors with Neutrinos

Abstract:

Over the past 6 years, the joint program from Sandia and Livermore National Labs has demonstrated that neutrino detection can be used for direct monitoring of the operation of commercial nuclear power reactors. We are now engaged in developing neutrino detectors which will enable simple and cost-effective deployment at these facilities. The practical challenges, including the necessary operation in high-background environments with a small overall footprint, have led us to several interesting developmental paths, including a first attempt at measuring coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering. In this talk, we will discuss the overall neutrino monitoring program as well as some of the more interesting aspects of our detector development efforts.
